Term Definitions

·         LCD – Liquid Crystal Display - a digital display that uses liquid crystal cells that change reflectivity in an applied electric field; used for portable computer displays and watches etc.

·         CRT- Cathode-Ray Tube - a vacuum tube in which a hot cathode emits a beam of electrons that pass through a high voltage anode and are focused or deflected before hitting a phosphorescent screen.

·         Blackberry - A hand-held device which serves as a cellular phone, personal organizer, wireless Internet browser, speakerphone, long-range digital walkie-talkie, and mini-laptop which can send and receive email from just about anywhere.

·         Bluetooth - A wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs)

·         URL - Uniform Resource Locator - The address of a web page on the world wide web.

·         HTTPS - HyperText Transport Protocol (Secure) - Protocol enabling the secured transmission of Web pages

·         DIMMs - Dual inline memory module - A printed circuit board with gold contacts and memory devices.

·         Intranet An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet technologies to securely share any part of an organization's information or operational systems with its employees.

·         Dot Matrix - A rectangular matrix of dots from which written characters can be formed.

·         ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - A data communications technology that enables faster data transmission.

·         ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network - Offers integrated voice, data, image and video services over the digital telephone network at high speeds.

·         MB Megabyte -A unit of information or computer storage, A megabyte is 1,024 kilobytes.

·         GB Gigabyte - A unit of information or computer storage, A megabyte is 1,024 kilobytes.

·         ROM Read-Only Memory - Memory whose contents can be accessed and read but cannot be changed.

·         UPS  -  Uninterruptible power supply - A device that allows your computer to keep running for at least a short time when the primary power source is lost.

·         Inkjet - A type of printing that jets ink onto paper to produce text and graphics. Inkjet printing is a cheaper alternative to laser printing.

·         LaserJet -  Brand name used by the American computer company Hewlett-Packard (HP) for their line of dry electro photographic (DEP) laser printers.

·         WAN - Wide Area Network - Any internet or network that covers an area larger than a single building or campus.

·         LAN - Local Area Network - A local computer network for communication between computers.

·         VPN - Virtual Private Network - A secure connection between your network and another one over the Internet.
